In this week long class, we will delve deep into the art of hand papermaking.
DAY 1: Intro to Western 10 am - 4 pm
Demos + experimentation
Beginning with the mold and deckle, we will cover the basics of Western hand papermaking: the tools and materials used, the properties of various paper pulps, the art of pulling sheets of paper, and embedding objects such as thread, ribbon, found text/images, or natural plant materials in our handmade papers. We will create sheets of beautiful handmade paper from cotton, abaca and flax fibers, some with inclusions (embedded objects).
DAY 2: Pigmented Pulp and Pulp Painting 10 am - 4 pm
Demos + experimentation
Learn how to pigment pulp, form colored and shaped sheets, and pulp paint with stencils. We’ll be using non-toxic earth pigments and cotton and abaca pulp to make a rainbow of papers with colorful designs.
DAY 3: Watermarking 10 am - 4 pm
Demos + experimentation
We will explore the basics of making images with watermarks in paper using wire, foam, and other materials. Using finely beaten colored cotton pulps, students will experiment with using different materials for simple watermarking and have the option of couching the watermarked sheet on a cotton support.
DAY 4: Intro to Eastern Fibers. 10 am - 4 pm
Demos + experimentation
Learn about how philly kozo fiber is prepared for papermaking! In this one day paper making workshop, we will be utilizing paper mulberry to get an introduction to the unique methods and materials of Eastern style hand papermaking, and how to form the diaphanous and strong sheets of paper made from this lustrous and local fiber.
DAY 5: Studio Day 10 am - 4 pm
Personal project day
Take everything you’ve learned over the week and come prepared with materials to create your own small edition of work.
All finished work will need to be picked up the following week.
